Since we opened the doors of our first branch in 1999, Smith O’Mahony has been dedicated to providing world-class eye and vision care to Irish communities. Mid-nineties

A partnership is formed

Paul Smith and Colm O’Mahony qualified as Optometrists from the Dublin Institute of Technology in the mid-nineties. Fast friends and study partners, they also shared a vision for the future of optical practice in Ireland, based on a goal of providing world-class eye and vision care to Irish families delivered through innovative techniques, cutting-edge technology and a firm commitment to delivering the best eye care experience for every patient at every stage of their lives.

Birr, then Loughrea

After gaining industry experience, the partners founded Smith O’Mahony Eyecare in 1999. They opened the doors of their first practice in Birr that year, and their innovative approach earned them a reputation for exceptional eye care very quickly.

The partners expanded to Loughrea, Co. Galway just 2 months after opening the Birr flagship branch. And the business continued to grow – largely through word of mouth, as one patient recommended them to another.

A growing family

Three additional community branches were launched over the following 3 years, in Edenderry, Mitchelstown and Cahir and the team have set their sights on further growth as the eyecare market demands more choice and innovation from their providers. This dynamic team now includes six Optometrists and more than 14 Optical Assistants.

OUR family has grown considerably, but our commitment to providing exceptional eyecare for YOUR family in the communities we serve remains unchanged.
